Fishing Tips & FAQ

Before you go

Essential tips for fishing in Tulum

๐ŸŒ…

Go early, always

Fishing action in the Caribbean peaks at dawn and tapers by mid-morning offshore. Offshore departures are 5:30โ€“6:00 AM for good reason โ€” don't fight it.

๐Ÿงด

Use reef-safe sunscreen

Regular sunscreen is banned in Quintana Roo's waters. Use mineral/reef-safe SPF or bring a long-sleeve sun shirt. You'll be on the water for hours โ€” sun protection is critical.

๐ŸŒŠ

Take seasickness meds the night before

If you've ever been seasick, take Dramamine or Bonine the evening before and morning of. Once you're nauseous on a boat, it's too late. Don't let seasickness ruin your trip.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

Wear non-marking, non-slip shoes

Deck shoes or water sandals with grippy soles are ideal. Barefoot is fine on calm days but footwear is recommended offshore. Avoid black-soled shoes that mark the deck.

๐Ÿ“ธ

Bring a waterproof phone case

Salt spray, waves, and wet hands are constant on a fishing boat. A $15 waterproof phone pouch will protect your phone and let you get the underwater shots that make the trip photos memorable.

๐ŸŒ

No bananas on the boat

It's considered extremely bad luck among Caribbean fishermen. Don't bring bananas in any form โ€” including banana bread, banana-flavored anything. It's taken seriously by captains and crew.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to book a charter?+

No. Our captains and crew will teach you everything. Even if you've never held a fishing rod, you can have an incredible day. We tailor the experience to your group's skill level.

What's the minimum age for fishing trips?+

We recommend a minimum age of 6 for the half-day inshore trip and 10 for offshore trips. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Life jackets are provided for all ages.

Can I keep the fish I catch?+

Edible species (mahi, wahoo, tuna, snapper, etc.) are yours to keep within legal limits. Billfish (sailfish, marlin) must be released under Mexican law. We'll ice and bag your catch.

What happens if it rains?+

Fishing continues in light rain โ€” fish don't care about rain and it often improves bite. We cancel only if there are unsafe conditions (lightning, sustained high winds). We'll reschedule or refund in this case.

Do I need a Mexican fishing license?+

Yes, but we handle it for you. Fishing licenses are included in the price of every charter. You don't need to arrange anything separately before your trip.

Should I bring my own gear?+

All gear is provided โ€” rods, reels, tackle, bait, lures. If you have your own favorite rod or reel, you're welcome to bring it. Just let us know in advance if you plan to use fly gear or specific light tackle.

Where exactly do charters depart from?+

We depart from the fishing dock on the Tulum coast, approximately 15 minutes from the Tulum Pueblo and 5 minutes from the Zona Hotelera. Exact meeting coordinates are sent on booking confirmation. Hotel pickups available on all-inclusive packages.

Is fishing in Tulum sustainable?+

Yes. We operate under Mexican fishing regulations, release all billfish, use circle hooks to minimize injury, and support the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve's conservation programs. Sustainable fishing practices are non-negotiable for us.
