Inshore paradise
Tulum's coastal lagoons, mangrove edges, and crystal-clear flats make it one of the premier inshore fishing destinations in the Caribbean. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects some of the most pristine flat-fishing territory on earth.
These shallow, crystal-clear waters are ideal for sight fishing — one of the most technically demanding and rewarding forms of angling. You'll spot your quarry before you cast, requiring precise fly or lure presentation to trigger a strike.
The three grand slam species — tarpon, permit, and bonefish — are all present in Tulum's flats, making it possible (though challenging) to achieve the coveted Caribbean Grand Slam in a single day.

The big three
DIY shore fishing
Yes — Tulum's public beaches and piers are free to fish from without a guide. The Tulum Beach area, the Zona Hotelera pier, and the Boca Paila road pullouts all offer DIY access to fishable water.
A Mexican fishing license is technically required for any fishing, including shore fishing (around $20 USD/day from CONAPESCA or online). You'll need your own gear — there are no tackle shops on the beach, though a few in the Tulum Pueblo area stock basic supplies.
