Inshore paradise

World-class flat fishing in Tulum

Tulum's coastal lagoons, mangrove edges, and crystal-clear flats make it one of the premier inshore fishing destinations in the Caribbean. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects some of the most pristine flat-fishing territory on earth.

These shallow, crystal-clear waters are ideal for sight fishing — one of the most technically demanding and rewarding forms of angling. You'll spot your quarry before you cast, requiring precise fly or lure presentation to trigger a strike.

The three grand slam species — tarpon, permit, and bonefish — are all present in Tulum's flats, making it possible (though challenging) to achieve the coveted Caribbean Grand Slam in a single day.

The big three

Shore & flat species

🐟

Tarpon

Megalops atlanticus

Permit

Trachinotus falcatus

The most technically demanding catch in Caribbean flat fishing. Permit are notoriously selective and wary — hooking one on fly is an achievement that seasoned anglers travel the world to accomplish. Boca Paila is a permit mecca.

Bonefish

Albula vulpes

Called "the grey ghost" for good reason — bonefish are among the most skittish and fast fish on the flats. They feed with their tails up in shallow water and can detect the slightest disturbance. Pound for pound, one of the hardest-fighting fish in the ocean.

DIY shore fishing

Can you fish for free in Tulum?

Yes — Tulum's public beaches and piers are free to fish from without a guide. The Tulum Beach area, the Zona Hotelera pier, and the Boca Paila road pullouts all offer DIY access to fishable water.

A Mexican fishing license is technically required for any fishing, including shore fishing (around $20 USD/day from CONAPESCA or online). You'll need your own gear — there are no tackle shops on the beach, though a few in the Tulum Pueblo area stock basic supplies.
